Tanaka's Department Store

An optional location that doesn't provide much to the grander narrative, Tanaka's Department Store provides quality goods at prices that make YOU feel like luxury. After all, if nobody wants them here, why does the Resident Representative's best friend keep coming back...?

Design

While not inheritely large in-game, Tanaka's Department Store is a big box location, with freezers and store shelves lined wall-to-wall containing an assortment of different goods. It's comprised mostly of furniture from the Diner and Supermarket themes, the former being especially true for the 50's-themed diner held on the 2nd floor.

As stated just above, the second floor is themed after 50's-themed restaraunts like Payne's Sandwich Shop and Steak N' Shake. In-line with the rest of Lunarvale, the area comprising of furniture from the Diner series is colored exclusively in red, minus the obvious sink/grill combo..

The bookstore section of Tanaka's, to the right past the ATM, would be designed like typical manga stores like Kinokuniya if given the proper space. However, as of writing this, it simply contains a few bookshelves and an Items wheel.

History

During the initial 2023 release of Lunarvale, it was decided that the path leading up to Hilda and Brad's home (which simply contained trees and roses) needed something to make it look more busy and/or lived in, thus Tanaka's Department Store was constructed in Lunarvale. At the time, it was only a single room, before like Hilda's, it only lasted for a single revision and changed to what you see it as today.

It was established early on that the second floor would become the diner, as characters like Brad would need a hangout spot that didn't take too much space or distract from other areas. So keeping in line with Tanaka's (character and store's) motifs, the Diner theme was established. Subsequent rooms also filled a purpose. The store needed a warehouse, so the basement was used. Hilda loves apple cider and Tanaka's is the only importer of it, so the back rooms were used. Marianne loves books, so the right room was used.

Update: Though the left room/break room wasn't created for this website, it was ultimately made inaccessible as there was no way to make the entrance look out of place while keeping the area looking practical in-universe. Sorry eh heh, was anyone excited for that anyways...?

Trivia

  • The name of Tanaka's is a double reference. The full name, Tanaka's Department Store, is a reference to the Junes chain from Persona 4. Junes is essentially a corporate shopping center who has a minor role in the story as a result of them putting smaller businesses out of, well, business. The name though, Tanaka's, is a reference to President Tanaka, a sleazy businessman/celebrity who once swindled and scammed his customers before turning a new leaf thanks to the player.
  • The Tanaka's seen in Lunarvale isn't actually the main store. Rather, it's a smaller location with Tanaka overseeing its development until starts becoming successful. However, if Tanaka were to pull out from Lunarvale, it's possibly the town could fall apart.
  • When Tanaka's Department Store opened, many of the smaller businesses had subsequently gone out of business due to Tanaka's hostile business practices. It's also the only importer for select products, allowing Tanaka to essentially extort the residents scot-free.
  • Tanaka's Department Store used to sell things like video games, tools, and sporting equipment. However, as a result of Marianne's interference, the sales of these were stopped, making them hard to come by nowadays.
  • Tanaka's Department Store can be seen as light commentary on late-stage capitalism and the cutthroat takeovers of small towns, especially for corporations like Walmart, where a once socially-connected town had the beauty quietly strangled out of it by a business with no regard for its moms and pops.
